Craig McCaw's Clearwire Wireless Broadband service really hits the spot. The company started about two years ago launching high speed wireless internet service in three cities. Medford Oregon was the first city on the West Coast of the US to get the service. It's not WiFi, but it is based on the WiMax standard. You can get Clearwire for about one dollar per day.

Fast... Clearwire gives you broadband speed with an always-on, always-secure Internet connection at speeds over 25 times faster than dial-up.

Secure... Clearwire's combination of operating only on licensed 2.5GHz frequencies and secure OFDM transmission protocol, to provide a very secure connection.

Simple... You can set up Clearwire yourself in just minutes. There’s no software to download and no technician to wait for.

The best part about Clearwire is portability. The modem is not the type you would plug into your PCMCIA card slot, but it is small enough that you can carry it with you inside your laptop carrying case. You can use your wireless internet anywhere Clearwire offers service… nation wide! Check out this link for coverage maps.

Download/Upload speeds are 768/256Kb/s and 1500/256 Kbps. Pretty reliable too. I’ve been using the service since early 2006 and have never experienced outage issues.

You can order clearwire here

Clearwire just recently went public under the ticker clwr. This is the Sec postings. You can check out the stock on Google or Yahoo. They're building markets in the US and Europe. Clearwire also offers VOIP phone service for on their network.

Getting the service is easy and pretty painless. Just go to High Tech Center , an authorized agent for Clearwire, and get your pricing and availability questions answered. Then click on the order button. They'll send out your modem you'll be up and running within five minutes of receiving the modem. You can get it sent overnight, but standard shipping is Priority Mail.

The folks at High Tech Center are experts in wireless networking too, so if you need help configuring a Wireless Router (wifi) they can get you set up in a jiffy. They even have Linksys wireless routers (WRT54-GL) configured with open source aftermarket software that allows you to setup hotspots, repeaters and other types of network configurations.
